Jubilance

Joy can be found around every corner... Follow the arrow to virtually walk through the several spaces where my installation can be found!

We are living in time where the world is uncertain and joy is hard to come by, where life has seemed to come to a halt. I originally created Jubilance, as an interactive installation piece for exhibition at the Alice R. Rogers and Target gallery at the College of Saint Benedict | Saint John’s University. The piece was meant to evoke joy in the viewer, where the viewer could walk through it and touch it. I also had the idea to have the audience to make a pompom to add to the piece, or take one out of the gallery to symbolize bringing a piece of “joy” home with them. The pandemic outbreak pushed states to initiate a stay at home order, causing colleges, business, and schools to close. As the world was advised to not leave our homes and exhibiting in a gallery was not possible, I had to find a way to instead immerse the spaces around me in art.

I started to put my piece up in ordinary spaces around my home, in the kitchen, living room, bedroom desk and around my hot tub outside. I filled the places in which I spend time daily, with Jubilance.  This symbolizes the joy discovered in these so-called ordinary spaces, in the midst of not being able to leave our homes. Vivid pinks, reds, oranges, blues, and yellows throughout the piece align with my idea that bright colors promote feelings of happiness and cheerfulness.  During this global pandemic, we are to find joy in the simple things that may often be taken for granted. Things like spending time with our families, virtual gatherings with friends, and getting outside and breathing fresh air. In this new normal, we are invited to find peace in solitude with oneself, yet happiness in spending time with loved ones, reminding us all to appreciate and discover joy in everything we have around us.
